Choose ethical chocolate when you want to make a real difference

For most of us, chocolate is the best way enjoy something sweet and indulgent, but did you know that it can come at a cost? For many decades, the cocoa industry has seen its fair share of serious issues such as child labour, poverty, and environmental damage, and whilst it’s beginning to change, it’s important to be proactive in choosing your chocolate.

When you want to make active changes towards living more sustainably, taking a look at the brands of chocolates you choose is a good place to start. Big brands such as Quality Street have made the steps towards wrapping their chocolate in recyclable waxed paper, however they still sell them in hard plastic tubs.

Take your time researching the chocolate brand and consider a few things. What packaging are they using? Have they made any commitments to becoming more sustainable? What is their story and their message? Are they paying a fair wage to their farm workers?

Another important quality to look out for is the Fairtrade symbol. Try and find Fairtrade growers owning their own chocolate and it’s also important to find Rainforest Alliance or Soil Association certified organic ingredients.
