Greenwashing vs Greenhushing

greenwashing

Two very similar words, but two very different meanings.

Greenwashing is the practice of making false or misleading claims about the environmental benefits of a product or service. In the past we have seen companies exaggerate the recyclability or biodegradability of their product, or make claims about a product being “green” or “eco-friendly” that are not supported by real evidence.

The purpose of greenwashing is to make a product appear more environmentally friendly than it actually is, in order to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. With so many companies guilty of greenwashing, it’s become something that many companies now fear they’ll be accused of- which is where greenhushing comes in.

Quite simply, greenhushing is when a brand or corporation deliberately withholds information about their environmental goals and accomplishments.

According to a new study*, we’re due to see a rise this year in greenhushing as corporations are increasingly choosing not to publicise details of their climate targets in order to avoid scrutiny and accusations of greenwashing. It’s also believed that companies want to remain silent on their sustainability goals and practices in case they fall short of their stated targets.

This new trend not only causes consumers to be unsure of what to believe, but climate activists are now advocating for stricter disclosure rules in order to encourage firms to increase their pledges and commitments.
